The Rut

Hey guys. I wanted to talk a bit about the rut that can sometimes occur at the intermediate level of guitar.

You will find periods of intense exploration and enhancement in your playing, and you may find periods where your playing can feel stale and you can lose interest in it. This is the rut. When you are there you will feel it. What I have found is that to help solve these periods of stale activity you should step outside of your routine and begin to work on something completely different.

Example:

You have been working on the minor pentatonic scale for some time and have really started to take control of it but lately you feel that you are always just playing the same licks. At this point these licks have become habit in your playing. You will play them without even thinking. Step out and start to practice something completely different. This will help to create a new interest in a different area. Also, without realizing it any practice of any topic will enhance your total overall skills. In other words stepping away from the minor pentatonic scale may be the best practice of the minor pentatonic scale at some points.

Lets help to support the group in these forums. Open up some discussion and we can all learn a great deal.
